How to Repair Minor SOS Scratches in Formica Countertops

Things You'll Need
- Dish washing liquid
- Glass bowl
- Automotive paste wax
- Clean soft cloths
- Buffing cloth
- Formica filler
- Steel wool
- Wax polish spray

Clear all objects from the area around the scratches. Pour a few drops of dish washing liquid into a bowl. Add warm tap water to the bowl and stir it with your finger.

Dip a soft cloth in the soapy water. Clean the scratches and the area surrounding them with the soap-laden soft cloth. Wipe the scratches and the area surrounding them with a dry soft cloth.

Apply automotive paste wax to an edge of a clean soft cloth. Rub the edge of the cloth into the scratches. Continue rubbing the paste wax into the scratches until you can see that the paste has filled in the scratches.

Buff the surface on and around the scratches with a clean buffing cloth. Stop buffing the surface when the scratches appear less pronounced than they were when you began.

Apply Formica filler to an edge of a clean soft cloth. Rub the edge of the cloth into the scratches. Continue rubbing the Formica filler into the scratches until you can see that the filler has filled in the scratches. Let the Formica filler set for a day before proceeding.

Gently buff the scratches with an edge of a piece of steel wool using slow, circular motions. Stop buffing the scratches with the steel wool when the surface of the Formica is smooth.

Spray a wax polish onto the scratches and the area surrounding them. Wipe the wax polish into the scratches and the area surrounding them with a soft cloth. Return the various objects to the Formica counter top.
