A soccer player should always wear protective shin guards when participating in a match. Most referees will not allow the player onto the playing field if he or she is not wearing the correct protective equipment. Shin guards are available from sports stores and some designs include ankle guards for added protection. The protective shin guards come in several designs and sizes, and range in cost. Known sports brands shin guards will be more expensive but allow better protection and are generally more comfortable to wear while playing.

      Measure your height. Shin guards are generally in sizes of small, medium and large. Your height will determine which shin guards to buy.

      Buy small sized shin guards if you are under 4 foot, 7 inches. Certain sports brands produce extra-small shin guards, which should be bought for children who are several inches below this height.

      Purchase medium-sized shin guards if you measure between 4 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 3 inches.

      Obtain large sized shin guards if you measure between 5 feet, 3 inches and 5 feet 11 inches. Certain brands manufacture and extra-large size for people of 6 feet in height and over.
