How to Block Cold Air From Windows

Old windows reduce the energy efficiency of the home.

Windows are a major issue in older homes, causing large amounts of heat loss due to poor insulation and thin window panes. Double glazing has improved the efficiency of the glass, sealing it and reducing radiant heat loss. The frame around the window can still be a problem. If it is not properly sealed, the wind will leak through the cracks along the window. Sealing and insulating is cheap and may save you lots of money on your heating bills. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove old caulk from the window using a putty knife. Caulk will be around the window frame. Cracked caulk causes drafts.

    • 2

Insert a tube of caulk into a caulk gun and cut off the tip of the caulk tube. Squeeze the caulking gun so that some material comes out and wipe away.

    • 3

Run the tip of the caulk tube while squeezing the caulk gun trigger to release the caulk along the window frame. Make a thick bead. Allow the caulk to sit and dry.

    • 4

Apply weather stripping to the bottom of the window and in the door jamb to seal it from wind. The felt presses together, preventing wind from coming through the window.

    • 5

Fill a sock with beans and place it on the window sill to block any wind.
