Creating a custom book jacket is a fun and exhilarating experience that teaches children creativity and the love of reading. The artist can express herself by making a book jacket express her ideas. Kits are available for purchase; however, the best method is to create your own. Thus, it is necessary to know the basics of the art of book jackets and to be creative.

1
Cut a portion of butcher paper so that it is longer than the book. Fold the top and bottom edges in order for it to fit the book. Then place the paper around the book and place the extra paper under the book cover.
-
2
Check to make sure the paper is tight and firm. If it is not, you need to readjust the paper. Taping the jacket to the book is a good way to ensure that the jacket remains firmly attached to the book.

Write the title of the book and the author's name on the front. Be creative about the events of the story and be creative when you draw them. This will add color and life to the book jacket. Think of major characters or scenes and use these as inspirations to assist in your cover design. With "The Hobbit," pictures of the ring and the dragon Smaug could be included on the jacket. Use non-bleeding pens/markers or colored pencils to decorate the cover to prevent ink from staining the book's original cover.

4
Write a synopsis on the back and place it with tape so the cover doesn't come undone. A synopsis is a summary (3-5 sentences) of the book. It provides readers with highlights that are geared toward making them want to purchase the book.
-
5
Utilize creative fonts. Stencils purchased from art supply stores, premade lettering and special pens will help the attractiveness of your cover.
-
6
Set the book and its new jacket down somewhere it will not be disturbed for about an hour. This will allow the artwork to dry and the tape to strengthen its hold.
