How to Set the Computer to Use a Dynamic IP Address to Locate the Hard Drive

In Windows computers, users have the option to enable a dynamic IP address for their system. Contrary to static IP addresses, dynamic IPs are automatically renewed on a set schedule. If your IP address is set to static mode, you can change it in the Windows Control Panel. You might want this option if you need to locate a network hard drive or connect to a work group.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the "Start" menu, click on "Control Panel," type "adapter" into the "Search" box, and then select "View network connections" underneath the "Network and Sharing Center." In Windows XP, select "Network and Internet Connections" in the Control Panel and then choose "Network Connections."

    • 2

Right-click on your network connection and select "Properties" from the context menu.

    • 3

In the default tab that opens up, select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" from the list and click "Properties."

    • 4

Select "Obtain an IP address automatically," click "OK," select "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" from the list, and repeat the same process. Your computer will now begin using a dynamic IP address.
