Scanjet 5300C Troubleshooting
When using the HP Scanjet 5300C, you may experience problems with hardware, software or the connection to the computer. Some common issues include poor quality when scanning, connection problems, configuration errors or software errors. Following basic troubleshooting steps will ensure your scanner is up and working in minutes, as opposed to taking it into a repair shop or calling technical support and possibly spending over an hour troubleshooting with a technician.

1
Verify that your computer hardware meets the minimum system requirements, including the Microsoft Windows operating system, CD-ROM drive, USB or parallel port to connect the device, at least 32MB of RAM, 105MB of space to install the software and a VGA monitor. If you do not have adequate space, you may need to uninstall programs by going to the "Add and Remove Programs" option located in the "Control Panel."

2
Check the connection between the computer and the scanner and the scanner and power outlet. Make sure the outlet is working and the cable is securely plugged into the wall and back of the scanner. Check the USB or parallel connection running to the computer to verify that it is certified and plugged in completely. If using a parallel or SCSI cable, check the pins to ensure they aren't broken or bent.

3
Update your drivers for the correct version of Windows and your scanner model. You may need to download the drivers from the HP website, located under resources, if they have been updated instead of using the CD that came with the scanner.
-
4
Uninstall and reinstall the software through the computer's "Control Panel." Open "Add and Remove Programs," scroll down to "HP Precision Scan" and click "uninstall." Download the latest version from the HP website and double-click the file to begin the installation. It may not have installed correctly the first time, and may cause problems when receiving and sending data.
