How to Change a Traverse Rod Hanger

How to Change a Traverse Rod Hanger thumbnail
Drapes hang on traverse rods.

Traverse rods allow drapes to slide open using a cord and pulleys. The drapes attach to the rod with hangers, small connections on wheels. The weight of the drapes spreads out over the length of the rod, requiring each hanger to support only a fraction of the weight. Because there are so many hangers on a traverse rod, they are the part most prone to damage.. Replacing a damaged hanger requires you to slide the preceding hangers out, replace the broken hanger with a new one, and then slide all the hangers back in. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Remove the drapes from the traverse rod. You can work on the rod with the drapes still hanging from it, but it will be more difficult.

    • 2

Remove any decorative covers from the traverse rod and take the rod down. You may have to unscrew the retaining clips on the ends of the rod to remove it from the wall.

    • 3

Press the retaining clip on the end of the rod in to allow the hangers to slide out of their grooves.

    • 4

Slide all the hangers off the traverse rod, until you reach the broken one. Replace the broken hanger with a new one. Then slide all the hangers back into their groove on the traverse rod. You can press the retaining clip down to make this process easier.

Reinstall the traverse rod on the wall, and rehang the drapes on the rod..
