Soulseek Troubleshooting

Soulseek is a peer-to-peer file sharing application for Windows designed for sharing legal music by unsigned and independent artists. Soulseek includes chat rooms and social functionality designed for meeting new friends with similar interests and finding new music related to the music you already like. Network configuration problems or software conflicts can cause Soulseek to crash or be unable to connect, download or upload files over the Internet. The Soulseek application may crash or file transfers just won't occur properly if there's a problem. Bear in mind that Soulseek is a peer-to-peer application, and some file transfer errors can occur because of a problem with another user's network settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that Soulseek can automatically open the TCP port it needs on your router. Click "Options" at the top of the Soulseek window, click "General Options" and click "Test Firewall and Router Settings." If the web page says the port is closed, forward the TCP port from the "Listening Port" box to your computer using your router's web interface. Consult your router's documentation for more information.

    • 2

Verify that any firewall software running on your computer isn't blocking Soulseek. Even if you previously allowed Soulseek, a Soulseek update could have caused the program to change and be blocked again.

    • 3

Uninstall Steganos Internet Anonym Pro, Steganos Secure P2p, XFire Instant Messaging or WindowBlinds 3.x if you have any of these programs on your computer. Soulseek isn't compatible with them.

    • 4

Uninstall Nod32 Internet Monitor, ZoneAlarm on Windows 2000 SP3 or SP4, NetLimiter, WebWasher, Iontas PCEye2000 Parental Control and WyvernWorks Firewall if you have any of these programs on your computer. These programs can potentially cause problems with Soulseek.

    • 5

Disable UPnP if Soulseek is crashing. Click "Options" in the Soulseek window, click "General Options," uncheck the "Use UPnP (Automatic Port Forwarding)" checkbox by clicking it and click "OK." You'll have to forward ports manually on your router if you disable UPnP.

    • 6

Delete corrupted or old .cfg files. Click "Start," click "Computer," navigate to "C:\Program Files\Soulseek," copy all the .cfg files to another location for backup and delete all the .cfg files except for login.cfg and try re-opening Soulseek.

    • 7

Upgrade to Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or Windows 7. Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and earlier contain a limit on the number of half-open TCP connections that can't be changed. Microsoft designed this limit to slow the spread of viruses, but it can interfere with Soulseek's legitimate connections.
