How to Connect a Quake 4 Server

Quake 4 is the fourth game in the award-winning Quake series and the first to be developed by Raven Software. The cyborg-alien race known as the Strogg have returned, and it's up to you and your men to conquer their home planet. Its multiplayer allows up to 16 players to compete in such varied modes as Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. The game is available on PC, Mac OS X, Linux and the Xbox 360.

  1. Connecting Through Console

      Press "Ctrl," "Alt" and the tilde (~) key at the same time to open the console, which allows you to issue commands to your game client.

      Get a list of servers by entering the console command "listServers" for a scanned server list, "getServers" for the master server list, "lanScan" to scan your local area network for servers, or "netScan" to find servers over the Internet.

      Enter the console command "connect ip," where "ip" is the IP address of the server to which you wish to connect. If the server is active and not full, your client will automatically connect you to the server and you can start to play.

    Connecting Through the Server Browser

      Choose "Multiplayer" from the game's main menu.

      Select "Game Browser" to open Quake 4's server browser. This will query the master server for a list of all available servers, whether through Internet or LAN, and add them to your browser.

      Select the server you wish to join and press the "Join Server" button. If there is a slot available on the server, you will connect automatically.

    Connecting Through XQF (Unix)

      Launch the XQF program.

      Choose "id" or "LAN," depending on whether you wish to connect to one of id's own servers or one on your network, under "Quake 4" in the "Source" window.

      Press the "Update" button to query the master server for a list of available servers. To refresh this list, press the "Refresh" button.

      Choose a server from the list and press the "Connect" button. Your game will launch and you will be automatically connected to the server.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you cannot connect to a certain server, refresh your server list to make sure that the server is still live.
