How to Change GU10 Bulbs

Household spotlight arrays often utilize GU10-base lightbulbs. The distinctive feature of these small bulbs is that the base is not threaded; instead, it is composed of two metal contacts. If you have decided to upgrade the wattage of your existing bulbs or need to replace one that has failed, you will be able to complete the job in a minimal amount of time. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the bulb along the top edge.

    • 2

Twist the bulb approximately 1/4 turn in a counter-clockwise direction. When it is loosened from the socket, remove it and carefully set it aside.

    • 3

Using gloves, grasp the replacement bulb along the top and gently press it into the two holes in the lamp socket.

    • 4

Twist the bulb clockwise, approximately 1/4 turn. You will feel the contacts on the bulb base lock into place.

    • 5

      Discard the old bulb.

Tips & Warnings

  • When replacing light bulbs you should wear gloves, to both protect yourself from possible broken glass and to keep the bulb free and clear of any oil or contaminants that may decrease the life span of your bulb.

  • You should never exceed the wattage rating on your light fixture when replacing any light bulb. The rating is usually on a metallic sticker near the light socket.
