How to Get Rid of Black Spots on My Rose Bush

Those black spots on your rose bush should not be ignored. They are actually caused by a common but serious fungus that often attacks rose bushes. The black spots are the main symptom of the fungus and you should start taking action as soon as you notice the symptoms. Examine your roses often, including the leaves and stem, to help you recognize black spot fungus in its early stages.

Things You'll Need

• Pruning shears
• Wettable sulfur
• Soap-containing fungicide

Instructions

1. Remove all organic matter from around your rose bush to help prevent the black spot fungus from spreading. This includes sticks and dead leaves.

2. Give your rose bush plenty of sun. If something is obstructing the rose bush from receiving sun, such as an object or their location, take steps to remove that obstruction or move your rose bush. The black spot fungus is more likely to spread in dark, moist places, which sunlight helps eliminate.

3. Water only the roots of your rose bush. Do not get any unnecessary moisture on the stems, leaves or roses themselves. This will cause the black spot fungus to spread. Always water in the morning so the sun can help dry the rose bush quickly.

4. Prune the rose bush as much as possible. The denser the bush is, the more likely the black spot fungus is to spread. Cut away any areas that are already infected with the fungus.

5. Spray the leaves of your rose bush with wettable sulphur and a soap-containing fungicide, both available at plant nurseries. This will help prevent the black spot fungus from returning.

• The black spot fungus will keep living on parts of your rose bush that you cut away. Throw these parts in the trash, rather than your compost pile.
