How to Use a Cruzer

How to Use a Cruzer thumbnail
A flash drive lets you move your files from one computer to another.

Many people work on different computers throughout the day. They have a desktop computer at work, a desktop computer at home or a Mac and PC laptop computer. Often files must be transferred between these computers. Work done at home must be moved to a work computer or work done on a laptop must be transferred to a home computer. Work done on a Mac might have to be transferred to a PC. The advent of USB flash drives such as the Sandisk Cruzer has made this process simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the Sandisk Cruzer to an open USB port on your computer. The Cruzer is a portable drive, designed to be attached and removed regularly, so you should select a USB port that is easily accessible. This is not an issue with laptop computers, but can be with a desktop computer. Many desktop computers have USB ports on both the front and back of the computer. Choose a front USB port if available.

    • 2

Wait for the operating system to recognize the Sandisk Cruzer and install the drivers if necessary. This is an automatic process. When the drivers are loaded and the Cruzer is accessible, you will see a text notification balloon above your system tray. You will only go through this process the first time you attach the Cruzer to your computer. After the first time, your operating system will recognize the Sandisk Cruzer automatically.

    • 3

Click the Windows start button and select "Computer." In the "Devices With Removable Storage" section, you will see your floppy disk and CD drive if available and other removable drives attached to your computer. The Sandisk Cruzer will either be identified by name, such as "Sandisk (E:)," or as a generic removable drive, such as "Removable Disk (E:)," depending on whether your operating system has identified the Cruzer as a specific device or a generic device.

    • 4

Double-click on the Cruzer removable drive icon. A window will open showing the files on the drive. These files can be used like the files on any disk drive attached to your system. They can be opened, moved, copied and deleted.

    • 5

Right-click on the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in your system tray before removing the Sandisk Cruzer from the USB port. Select the "Eject External HDD" listing that corresponds with your Cruzer, for example "Removable Disk (E:)." When you see the text notification that says "Safe To Remove Hardware," you can remove your Cruzer from the USB port.

Tips & Warnings

  • Flash drives are easily lost. Do not use your Sandisk Cruzer to move files that are sensitive or contain personal information that you would not want someone else to access. For the same reason, do not use your flash drive to store your only copy of important files. Make sure you have a copy of important files stored on a computer.
