How to Make Red Poppies for Veterans Day

The red poppy flower has become a traditional symbol of American Veterans Day. The flower became popular because of the poem "In Flanders Fields," written by Colonel John McCrae during World War I. Homemade red poppies are a simple craft that families can create together to celebrate this holiday. They are easy enough that children can help make them. Tissue paper poppies can be given as gifts to serve as a reminder to honor this important day and all those who serve their country. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut red tissue paper into two squares. Fold in half and cut a "C" shape with wavy edges. Keep the scraps of the red tissue paper.

    • 2

Cut out one small square from the green tissue paper to create the stamen.

    • 3

Roll the scraps of red tissue into a ball. Cover the red tissue ball with the green tissue square. Twist the bottom of the green tissue together at the bottom of stamen to create a stem-like shape.

    • 4

Wrap floral tape around the wire and the stem of the green tissue until tight.

    • 5

Thread a red tissue paper petal from the bottom of the wire. Push the petal up until it is right under the stamen. Repeat this step with the other red petal.

    • 6

Gather the petals together and shape them upward to form your poppy. Fasten the bottom of the petals to the stem with floral tape.
