How to Write to Discontinue Supporting a Charitable Business
A study conduced in 2009 Bank of America Merrill Lynch and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University concluded there are four main reasons why individuals and families decide to discontinue support of a charity. Fifty-nine percent cited too frequent solicitation or asking for too much financial contributions. Other reasons include the decision to contribute elsewhere, changes in income or household situations that make it more difficult to contribute and changes within the charity. Deciding to discontinue support of a charitable business can be a difficult decision but there are appropriate ways to let them know why.

1
Address the envelope and letter to the appropriate address. The address can be found on any donation receipts or in the phone book.
-
2
Explain why you are writing the letter. In the first paragraph include what you have donated in the past. This establishes credibility. It is important that the person reading the letter knows who is writing and how much they have contributed to their business. The business is more likely to take these concerns seriously if leaders know long-term donors are no longer contributing.

3
Detail your concerns by letting the business know why you will no longer be supporting it. This information can help the business grow in the right direction. If there is a problem with the company, be specific and provide as many details as possible. If your household income has changed or it is an issue of finances, simply state this fact. There is no need to divulge personal information.
-
4
Conclude the letter on a positive note. At the end of the letter thank the business for the charitable deeds it continues to perform. In the case of changes in household income, let the company know that if things change you might consider donating again.
