Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space you will have to set up your booth. Once you know how much space you have, decide how many tables will fit in it while still allowing customers ample room to move around. A good basic booth layout with more than one table is a horseshoe shape which allows customers easy access to each table in your booth.

Set up your tables and cover them with cloths in a color that complements your merchandise. If you are selling hand-wrought jewelery with polished, but uncut, stones, for example, you may want to mimic the earthy or jewel tones of your goods in the cloths. A business display for a law firm at a trade show, on the other hand, will look elegant with black or navy blue tablecloths.

Arrange boxes underneath the tablecloths to vary the height of your displays. Collect free shoe boxes or shipping boxes in small to medium sizes. Place them to the rear of the table, then drape the cloth over them for instant height interest. This draws the eye over the entire table space and makes the best use of display space. The best height for merchandise is between waist height and eye level.

Line matching baskets from your local discount, dollar or craft store with complementary fabric to hold your goods. A farmstand-style booth benefits from rustic baskets lined with solid colored fabric and piled high with fruits and vegetables. A toy booth would look better with primary colored or pastel baskets and matching fabric. Be sure the size of the baskets works with your merchandise. Too small baskets won't fit enough items but if the baskets are too large your smaller items will be overwhelmed.

    • 5

Arrange lighting so that your products are highlighted. Purchase portable lights from your home improvement store and hang them or stand them so that the light shines directly on your merchandise. Good lighting brightens your booth and your goods.

    • 6

Keep the booth free of clutter. This includes all areas of the booth from the tables to the floor. If you must keep packaging, boxes or personal items in the booth, use tablecloths that drop all the way to the floor and stash your things under your tables. A clean booth will keep the focus on the merchandise and look professional.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some fairs or shows allow you a large tented booth, while others limit you to a single folding table.

  • Decorate your booth sparingly so that your customers' attention is always on your merchandise. Too much decor looks busy and is distracting.
