How do I Troubleshoot the Fax on a 657 Xerox WorkCentre?
The Xerox Workcentre 657 offers the ability to fax, scan, copy and print from the convenience of one machine. Sometimes a fax transmission fails, leaving both senders and recipients wondering what went wrong. Troubleshoot incoming and outgoing fax transmission failures before contacting technical support.

Troubleshooting Incoming Fax Failures
-
1
Confirm that the phone line is connected securely to both the machine and the wall jack, and then check the phone line for a dial tone.
-
2
Check for and remove any paper jams, close the top and side covers securely, and then confirm that the paper tray contains paper.
-
-
3
Check toner levels if the fax prints out but the page is blank. If the machine contains adequate toner levels, confirm that the sender faxed the correct side of the document.
-
4
Print another document if the fax prints out too dark to read. If the document prints correctly, the problem may be with the sender's machine or the quality of the original document. If the test document prints too dark, clean the recording unit following manufacturer instructions.
-
5
Check the "Refuse Junk Mail" setting if the machine answers the call but fails to receive the fax. This setting, when enabled, prevents the machine from receiving faxes from any sender not listed in the dial directory phone book.
Troubleshooting Outgoing Fax Failures
-
6
Confirm the recipient's fax number and availability. Check that you dialed the correct number. Also, confirm that the line was not busy when you tried to send the fax.
-
7
Ensure the functionality of the recipient's fax machine. Confirm that the recipient's fax machine is in proper working order and can receive faxes. If so, try changing the "Fax Speed" setting to a slower speed.
-
8
Ensure the compatibility of the recipient's fax machine. The Workcentre 657 can communicate with G3 facsimiles but not G2 or G4. Also, the 657 cannot transmit documents overseas.
