How to Configure the SMTP Smart Host

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an email service used to route email to the intended recipient. The Microsoft Windows Smart Host application is included with Windows server operating systems. Before the system forwards email, you must set up SMTP to route email. The server may be on the Internet, or you can use SMTP servers to route your own internal email for a company.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows server "Start" button, select "Administrative Tools," then click "Internet Information Services Manager." This opens the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) that hosts your website and the SMTP server settings.

    • 2

Right-click the SMTP server name on the left side of the window and select "Properties." Click the "Delivery" tab.

    • 3

Type the retry interval value in minutes. These time settings are the frequencies the SMTP server will use to try to send an email again after the first delivery attempt fails.

    • 4

Click the "Advanced" button. In this window, you configure the Smart Host. Type the domain name of the server where you want to route email. Click the "OK" button.

    • 5

Click "OK" again in the main properties window to save your settings and close the configuration window.
