How to Connect to a Remote Access Database

The Microsoft Access database engine lets you connect to a remote database. You can link to another database to run its queries, retrieve data or manage the tables. This is convenient if you have more than one database with important information and you want to link the two for reporting purposes. Linking databases is common in large networks where each department has its own database reporting services.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click your local Access database file. This loads the software and opens the database file simultaneously.

    • 2

Click the "External Data" tab. In the "Import" group, click "Access." This opens a linking wizard. Click the "Browse" button and point to the location of the remote database. Click "OK."

    • 3

Click "Link to the data source by creating a linked table" and click "OK." Select each table in the remote Access database that you want to link to.

    • 4

Click "OK" to finish linking to the database. Notice the external database tables are now shown in your list of Access tables.
