How to Measure for a Countertop Template
Countertops are sold by the square foot, but you have to know the linear measurements needed for the new fixture before you can order it. By sectioning your counter into rectangular sections, you can obtain an accurate measurement that can be transferred to a template. Take your measurements and then take them again, just to be positive that you got them right. Your template will be true and the resulting countertop will be ready for the install. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the back edge of the countertop from side to side against the wall. Make a rough drawing of the countertop on a piece of paper and then jot down the back measurement.
-
2
Measure the countertop's length by the width to find the square footage if it is straight with no bends. Divide the extra sections of a countertop with bends into squared off sections, making sure not to overlap where you already measured. Multiply the length times the width of these sections to find their square footages.

3
Transfer all of the measurements to your paper, not just the total square footage.
-
4
Add the measurements from any different, squared-off sections to find the total square footage of the counter. Write this down on your paper.
-
5
Measure how deep the lip is on the edge of your countertop by measuring the space from the front or side of the cupboard to the outer edge of the countertop.
-
6
Take all of your rough measurements to your hardware or kitchen design store so that they can compute an accurate template of your new countertop.
