How to Put Netting on a Helmet thumbnail
Installing netting on a military hat increases protection.

The military helmet has been a standard part of military gear since at least World War I. The more modern style appeared in the 1940s during World War II, according to the Wilson History and Research Center. Netting has been used for much of the time that helmets have been available. Netting is useful to both military personnel and as a part of law enforcement gear. The netting provides an extra layer of protection and reduces glare. It is easy to install on the helmet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the helmet liner, if applicable, and set aside. Some liners cover just the inside of the military helmet, while others are a full under hat that covers the head and neck.

    • 2

Separate the netting from the other police or military gear and lay it open on a hard work surface. Open and stretch the helmet netting slightly but without damaging the surface.

    • 3

Place the helmet on the square of netting with the crown of the helmet touching the netting and the open bowl where the head is placed pointing upward.

    • 4

Grasp each corner of the protective netting and pull it toward the inside of the hat. As you do, run the helmet straps on either side of the military helmet through a hole in the netting.

    • 5

Pull the drawstring along the edge of the helmet net to gather the edge of the net tightly around the helmet, tucking all edges to the inside as the net gathers. Tie the end of the drawstring loosely to secure the netting in place.

    • 6

Replace the helmet lining if applicable.
