How to Inflate the Tires on a Segway i2

How to Inflate the Tires on a Segway i2 thumbnail
Segway tires use the same valves as bicycle tires.

The Segway has become a symbol of our times. Its combination of effortless transportation and tight maneuverability has made it a household name. The Segway i2 uses patented gyroscopic technology, lithium-ion batteries and a wireless control device to move at speeds of up to 12.5 miles per hour for up to 24 miles. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that the Segway i2 only takes up a space about 19 inches wide by 25 inches deep. Even with all of its futuristic technology, the Segway i2 is still prone to flat tires.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Segway and unplug it from its charger.

    • 2

Unscrew the cap on both tires' air valves.

    • 3

Press the tire pressure reader against the valve until it returns a reading. The tire pressure should be 15 psi. Check both tires.

    • 4

Turn on the air compressor and press the tire valve connector against the valve on one of the Segway's tires. Inflate the tire until you feel the tire begin to become firm.

    • 5

Take the air compressor off the valve and use the tire pressure reader to check the pressure. If the pressure is below 15 psi, continue inflating the tire for several more seconds, then check again. Repeat until the pressure reaches 15 psi.

    • 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the other tire. Verify that the tires both have 15 psi, then replace the valve caps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure that the tire pressure is even. Uneven pressure will cause the Segway to lean to one side.

  • If you over-inflate a tire, remove the air compressor's tire valve connector from the air compressor line and press the connector against the tire valve. This will drain some of the air.

  • Take the proper safety precautions if using a high-powered air compressor.
