How to Snug Up a Loose Motorcycle Helmet thumbnail
Always wear a properly secured helmet when riding a motorcycle.

As of November 2010, 27 states had laws requiring that at least some riders of motorcycles wear helmets while on the open road. These laws are designed to promote safety for riders in the case of an accident. However, it is not only imperative that a helmet be worn, but that it fits snugly in order to maximize effectiveness in the case of an unfortunate event. Learning how to properly secure the strap will keep the helmet in the proper position while riding.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the helmet onto your head. Holding the helmet on each side, gently toggle or roll the helmet down over the top of your head until it is completely on.

    • 2

Pull the strap of the helmet under your chin tightly.

    • 3

Slide the strap through the D-ring buckle. There will be two rings on one side of the helmet that make up the D-ring buckle. The strap should be slid through both.

    • 4

Slide the strap over the first buckle and under the second buckle. Pull tight until the strap is firm, but not restrictive against your chin.

    • 5

Snap the strap into place. Most motorcycle helmets have a snap on the side of the helmet where the strap is secured. Note that the snap will not further tighten the fit, but merely secure it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the tightness of your motorcycle helmet often, as the vibration from riding can cause the strap to loosen.

  • Be sure to wear a motorcycle helmet that is snug at all times to maximize safety. Helmets should not feel loose or as if they can be easily moved around while on the head.
