How to Repair a Leaky Metal Roof
Metal roofs are recognized for their versatile styles, weather resistance and long-lasting durability. Although metal roofs are virtually maintenance free, they occasionally develop damage from violent storms and rust. Water can seep into homes through punctured or rusted portions of roofs. Promptly repair a leaky roof to restore a home's structural integrity and value. The longer roof leaks remain, the more damage they can cause to homes. Things You'll Need
- Wire brush
- Water
- Clean cloth
- Roofing mesh
- Metal shears
- Leather gloves
- Safety glasses
- Urethane roof cement
- Putty knife

Clean the damaged portion of the roof with a wire brush. Scrub away any dirt, corrosion and debris.

Rinse away the loose grime with water. Thoroughly dry the metal with a clean cloth. Make sure the metal is completely clean to provide a smooth surface for the repair.

Cut two identical square patches out of roofing mesh using metal shears. Make the patches large enough to overlap the damaged area by a couple inches on all sides. Wear leather gloves and safety glasses as you cut the patch.

Spread an even coat of urethane roof cement around the damaged area using a putty knife. Immediately lay one of the mesh patches over the cement.

Apply an even coat of urethane roof cement over the mesh patch. Press the cement into the mesh patch using the putty knife.

Place the other mesh patch over the layer of cement. Cover the patch with an even layer of roofing cement using the putty knife.

Press the roofing cement into the mesh patch to bond with the underlying cement. Allow the roofing cement to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

Only use roofing products and techniques recommended by your roof installer or manufacturer to prevent voiding the roof's warranty.
Do not repair the roof in wet, icy or windy weather conditions; you could slip or fall.
