How to Fix a Radiator Fluid Leak

The radiator is an essential part of a vehicle's cooling system. A leaking radiator is more than just an annoyance--it can also lead to major damage if it is not dealt with promptly. Check the coolant reservoir in your vehicle on a regular basis. A low level indicates a leak somewhere in the radiator. If you notice a neon-green puddle under the vehicle, then leak is probably serious and the radiator might need to be replaced. The good news is, radiators in modern cars are made from aluminum and plastic and are relatively inexpensive, and the replacement job is not too difficult.

Instructions

  1. Leaks In The Radiator

    • 1

Turn the car off and wait 30 minutes for the engine to cool down.

    • 2

Carefully remover the radiator cap with a towel. Turn the cap part of the way to release the air pressure, then remove the cap.

    • 3

Add a radiator "stop leak" product to the radiator. Stop leak products are available at auto parts stores. Read the instructions on the container. Top the radiator with coolant and replace the radiator cap.

Alternately, you can substitute black pepper in place of stop leak products. Add one ounce of black pepper to the radiator. The pepper swells up when it comes into contact with water and plugs the leak.

    • 4

Turn the engine on. Let it run 10 to 15 minutes. Inspect the radiator to see if the leaking has stopped.

    Radiator Hose Leaks

    • 5

Inspect the hoses and hose connections. If the leak is coming from the hose, the hose either has a hole or the connection is loose.

    • 6

Cover the holes with electrical tape. Wrap the tape several times around the hole. This is only a temporary fix that lets you get your car home or to the repair shop. Replace the hose as soon as possible.

    • 7

Tighten the clamps that secure the hoses to the radiator. If a loose connection is the problem, this will correct the problem.

    • 8

Turn the engine on and let it run 10 to 15 minutes. Inspect the radiator hose repair.
