Hobbies: How to Make Rubber Stamps

Hobbies: How to Make Rubber Stamps thumbnail
Rubber stamps can used for art and craft projects.

Rubber stamps can be used for various craft projects like scrapbooks, greeting cards or for decorating gift paper. Rubber stamping is suitable for creating multiple imprints of a simple or detailed design. Although you can purchase a rubber stamp from a craft store, it is also quite easy to make your own. Making your own also allows you to create a stamp design that is made specifically for your crafting project.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a piece of rubber. Buy a piece of rubber from your craft supply store or use a hard rubber eraser to create a stamp that requires a detailed design with fine lines.

    • 2

Get a small block of wood that will be used as the backing on which you will mount the stamp.

    • 3

Choose your stamp design, and trace it onto tracing paper using a pencil.

    • 4

Shade in areas of your design that will be cut out from the stamp using a dark pencil or pen. The un-shaded areas will be the actual design that will be used to stamp onto your craft work.

    • 5

Turn over the tracing paper, and place the shaded part over the piece of rubber. Center the design so that it does not go over the edges of the rubber.

    • 6

Take the side of a ruler, and rub it over the tracing paper on the rubber to imprint the pencil shading on the rubber. Use a ballpoint pen to trace around the outline of the pencil imprint on the rubber.

    • 7

Carve out the design using a craft knife, and carefully cut out the parts of the rubber that do not have the ink outline. The remaining part will become your stamp. Wipe off any residual eraser rubber dust from the cut out rubber.

    • 8

Put an impression of the rubber stamp on the block before you paste it to the small wooden block. Use permanent glue, and paste the stamp on the piece of wood that will be used as the backing of the stamp.
