Making edible bird feeders can be a fun family project and they also make a great gift for fellow bird lovers.

Things You'll Need

  • 18 oz. lard
  • 14 oz. wild bird seed mix
  • Glass tumbler
  • Jute
  • Metal washer
  • Scissors
  • Medium saucepan
  • Large spoon

Instructions

  1. Mixing the Ingredients

    • 1

      Melt the lard in a medium saucepan over low heat.

    • 2

      Remove the melted lard from heat.

    • 3

      Stir in the wild bird seed mix, and blend it together well.

    Forming the Bird Feeder

      Tie a metal washer to the end of a 24-inch long piece of jute.

      Center the washer inside the glass tumbler.

    • 6

      Pack the seed and lard mixture into the tumbler, keeping the jute in the middle of the mixture.

      Wait until it has cooled, then remove the formed edible bird feeder from the tumbler.

      Hang the bird feeder using the remaining jute.

Tips & Warnings

  • Nuts and dried fruits can also be added to the bird seed mixture. Provide water for the birds as well and check often during freezing weather.

  • Hang the bird feeder in a location that is inaccessible to cats and other predators.
