How to Check a Neoprene Float

A neoprene float jacket is a swimming and buoyancy aid, designed to be worn by children to keep their heads above water when learning to swim. The vest is constructed of neoprene and is filled with removable foam floats. As the child's swimming becomes stronger, the floats can be removed to adjust the buoyancy. After the float is removed, check to ensure the child is comfortable with the buoyancy. Although it looks similar to a life jacket, it is not and should never be used in place of a life jacket.

Instructions

    • 1

Place one foam float in each of the float jacket pockets. The foam simply slides into the slit or pocket. The number of pockets varies based on the brand of float and the age it is designed for, but typically infant and toddler floats have six to eight pockets and children's jackets have four to six pockets. Most floats come with enough foam to fill the pockets with two or three pieces of foam.

    • 2

Place the jacket on the child, just like you would a regular vest. Zip the float all the way up.

    • 3

Get into the pool. The water should be no deeper than your chest area. This is to ensure you have proper footing in case the buoyancy is not sufficient for your child. Place your child into the water. See if they can keep their head above water. If they can not keep their head above water, add an additional float to each pocket. Retest the float.

Remove additional floats by pulling them out of the pockets as the child's swimming skills improve. After floats are removed, check to ensure the child can still keep their head above water while wearing the jacket.
