How to Use Regular Detergent in a Front Loading Washer thumbnail
Front loading machines have no agitator.

Front-loading washing machines, also known as horizontal axis washing machines, are more environmentally friendly than top-loading machines. They use less water, energy, and laundry soap. While soap manufacturers do produce high-efficiency laundry detergent for more energy-efficient machines, you can use regular detergent with them. When doing a load of laundry, you simply use less than instructed on the package. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Read the instructions on your box of regular laundry detergent to find out how much detergent you are supposed to use per load.

    • 2

      Cut that amount in half.

    • 3

Use the provided scooper in the box of detergent to add that halved amount to the front-loading washer before you put your clothes in. Once you fill the machine with clothes, it is difficult to add soap.

    • 4

Close the door of the machine and run a regular cycle.
