With the constant stream of new laptop hardware technology, keeping your laptop up to date is a challenge for every computer user. Upgrading your Compaq Presario nx6110 laptop's hardware is one of the best ways to keep your laptop updated. However, replacing any hardware device in your Compaq laptop means dismantling the computer to some extent. This can be an intimidating prospect for the inexperienced.

Instructions

    • 1

      Power down your laptop. Unplug the AC power cable and all external devices from the laptop. Close the display panel and place the laptop face down. Rotate the computer so the front edge is facing forward. Slide the two battery release latches to the right. Lift the battery pack out of its compartment along the top edge of the laptop.

      Remove the hard drive compartment cover and its two Phillips screws from the lower left corner of the laptop. Slide the hard drive to the left to disconnect it from the connectors inside the drive compartment. Lift the hard drive out of the laptop and set it aside.

      Remove the wireless card cover and its Phillips screws from the lower right corner of the laptop. Disconnect the two antenna cables from the wireless card. Spread the retention clips on each side of the wireless card. Tilt it upward at an angle and then pull the wireless card from its slot. Do the same for both memory modules inside the same compartment.

      Remove the single Phillips screw fastening the CD/DVD drive to its compartment in the upper left corner of the laptop. Insert a paper clip into the tiny release hole on the face of the drive. Push the paper clip into the release hole to eject the CD/DVD drive from its compartment. Pull the drive out of the compartment all the way and set it aside.

      Remove all Phillips screws from the laptop's bottom casing. Flip the laptop over and open the display panel all the way. Locate the four retention latches along the top row of keyboard keys. Slide each latch toward you to disengage the keyboard from the laptop's casing.

      Lift up on the keyboard from the top side. Place the keyboard face down on the laptop's surface. Disconnect the keyboard's ribbon cable from the motherboard. Remove the keyboard from the laptop.

      Lift up on the switch cover, which is the plastic piece along the top edge of the laptop's casing near the display panel. Disconnect the small ribbon cable extending from the switch cover's bottom side to the motherboard. Remove the switch cover from the laptop.

      Locate the cooling fan in the upper left corner of the motherboard. Disconnect the fan's cable from the motherboard and remove the four Phillips screws fastening the fan to the motherboard. Lift the cooling fan off of the processor and set it aside.

      Turn the processor's flat-head locking screw in the counterclockwise direction one-half turn to unlock the processor from its motherboard socket. Lift the processor out of its socket and set it aside.

      Disconnect all cable extending from either side of the display panel to the motherboard. Remove the Phillips screws from each display hinge. Lift the entire display panel assembly from the laptop's base and set it aside.

      Remove the two remaining Phillips screws fastening the top cover to the laptop's base. Disconnect the small ribbon cable extending from the touchpad device to its connector on the motherboard. Grasp the top edge of the top cover assembly and begin to tilt it upward. Lift the entire top cover from the laptop and set it aside.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear an anti-static wrist strap as you dismantle your laptop. This prevents electrical damage to your motherboard.
