When winter hits, it brings with it many extra driving hazards. One easy way to make your drive safer is to properly clean your windshield from snow and ice. It takes a couple of extra minutes but it's a necessary part of winter car care and safe driving habits. Don't just depend on your wipers as it can ruin the blades and the motors.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your engine and turn your defrost on a low setting. Make sure to clear any snow from the outside vent near the windshield first. Let the defrost run for a couple of minutes to slightly melt the ice.

    • 2

Brush the snow off from the windshield and the roof of the car. Any snow on the roof can slide down over the windshield while driving, creating a major hazard.

    • 3

Carefully scrape the ice from the windshield. If the ice coating is very thick, start with a small hole at the lower corner where the defrost has made it a little softer and keep working on it.

    • 4

Turn on the wipers when the windshield is clear from snow and ice to completely clear up the glass. Spray with windshield wash if needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your windshield wash is made for cold weather, otherwise it will just freeze onto your windshield.

  • Make sure the wipers are not frozen before turning them on.

  • Do not use the defrost on the highest temperature as this can cause the glass to crack.

  • Scrape gently so you don't damage the windshield.
