How to Mount a Tire by Hand
Getting a tire onto a rim without the benefit of professional tire-mounting equipment isn't as difficult as it sounds. It can be heavy and dirty work, but doing the job yourself could save you money. The procedure is the same for any type of tire or rim and will work on any type of vehicle -- from a bicycle to a truck. The most important thing to remember is to have the wheel professionally balanced before you place it onto the vehicle.

1
Lay the rim onto its side on a solid surface. Soak the wall of the tire with soapy water, then turn the tire soapy side down onto the top of the rim. Slip an edge of the tire over the rim and push down with both hands. Move your hands around the wheel in opposite directions, pushing the tire over the rim as you go. You'll need to push down hard, especially for the last few inches; lean over the rim using your body weight to help.

2
Turn the wheel over and wet the tire wall. Push the edge of the tire over the rim as in Step 1.

3
Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure, then take the wheel to an auto center to be balanced.
