How to Evaluate Steam Mops

Steam mops are a great alternative to regular mops because of their ability to sanitize with hot steam. This kills germs, eliminates many allergens and provides a cleaner floor and improved air quality in your home. Steam mops come in a variety of sizes and have many different features. Steam mops are more expensive than regular mops or automatic mops with disposable heads, so it's important to know what you're looking for before you buy. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Read the sanitation information about the mop either on the box or from Internet research. Steam mops sanitize, but how long it takes depends on how hot the steam gets. Some models provide instant sanitation, while other models require holding the mop in place for up to 15 seconds on the area you wish to sanitize.

    • 2

Test the handle comfort and length on display models in the store. The length of the handle on any mop makes a big difference in comfort level during use. Many models come with adjustable handles, but others are in a fixed position.

    • 3

Check the size of the water reservoir. A larger tank means more weight, but it also means less time spent on refilling. A smaller water tank means a lighter mop, but larger rooms need a larger tank to complete the job without stopping.

    • 4

Look at the steam mop specifications to see if a cool down is required between fillings. If the unit has to cool down before each refill, this adds work time to your mopping.

    • 5

Measure the cord length and check for a built-in cord holder. Longer cords allow you to do larger room more efficiently, but having a place to secure the cord while working is important.

    • 6

Purchase a steam mop with a swivel head for easier cleaning around furniture, in corners and behind toilets. Make sure the mop head is slim enough to easily fit under furniture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy a steam mop from a retailer or website that has a good return policy. Sometimes appliances break or are faulty from the factory, so it's good to know you can return it if there is a problem.

  • Purchase extra microfiber covers when buying a steam mop. Microfiber covers get dirty and need to be changed. Having extra covers on hand makes mopping more efficient.

  • Some steam mops come with filters that need replacing at least every six months. This adds to the overall cost of operating the unit and should be considered before making a steam mop choice.
