A pressure cooker raises the pressure on food, forcing hot steam through the food and cooking faster than steaming or stewing alone. The Presto pressure cooker model 304 is a 4 qt. stainless steel pressure cooker. It has been discontinued by Presto. However, the seals are still available through the company and other pressure cooker outlets. It is extremely important to clean the seal rings thoroughly before the first use, and after each future use. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Presto 304 sealing ring
  • Soap
  • Water
  • Towel
  • Vegetable or olive oil

Instructions

    • 1

      Wash the seal ring in soap and hot water. Dry thoroughly.

      Inspect the ring. If the ring is cracked or torn, discard and replace with a fresh seal ring.

      Starting at the lock pin, push the rubber seal under the lock pin. Going around the edge of the lid, make sure that the gasket is under the stop tabs.

      Brush a small amount of vegetable or olive oil around the gasket and the locking flanges on the lid and pot.

Tips & Warnings

  • When replacing the seal, its a good time to clean and check the vent.

  • Be sure to follow the directions when filling and using a pressure cooker.

    The reason food is cooked faster in a pressure cooker is not exactly the fact that steam is forced into the ingredients; the pressure cooker traps the steam build-up and becomes pressurized to about 15 psi. This allows the water to be superheated typically to 250 - 275 F, much higher than the natural ambient pressure boiling point (212F). This higher temperature is what accelerates the cooking time.
