How to Prevent Clothes Dryer Fires
You may not realize this, but your clothes dryer can be a major fire hazard. When compared to your washing machine, the clothes dryer is a much more dangerous appliance. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2006, over 17,000 fires were caused by clothes washers and dryers; however, 92 percent of those fires were caused by the dryer, while only 4 percent were caused by the washer. Check to see that the lint filter in your clothes dryer is clean and intact before running the dryer.

Look at the air exhaust pipe and the outdoor vent flap. Neither of these areas can be obstructed or a fire could result.

Look over the clothes dryer connections periodically. If these are not properly plugged in and hooked up, they can pose a safety risk.

Turn your clothes dryer off when you're not using it. This is especially important at night when you're sleeping and when no one is home. Never leave the dryer running when you're not there.

Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for load capacity. Overloading your clothes dryer can be a potential fire hazard.

Schedule a professional inspection for a gas dryer at least once a year. Gas dryers can have leaks in the lines and connections that pose a serious risk of fire.
