How to Disable a Factory Car Alarm

Car alarms play a vital role in keeping cars safe from theft. Modern car alarms are complex because they are sensitive to vibration and human contact. Some car alarms sound in response to the slightest movement, and others sound on their own without any prompting. Some car owners prefer to install their own car alarms rather than rely on the factory-installed ones. Before you install a new alarm, you must disable the existing one.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the car. Normally the alarm goes off when the engine is engaged. But if the problem persists, stop the engine.

    • 2

Open the hood of the car. Wipe off the corrosion from the battery and inspect all wires to ensure they are connected properly. Corrosion and loose wiring may hinder the successful disabling of an alarm.

    • 3

Look for the alarm system box. Switch off the alarm box by inserting the alarm key into the slot.

    • 4

Locate the fuse box inside the car. It is usually found under the steering wheel. Identify the alarm fuse, which usually has an alarm label on it. Check the diagram of the fuse box.

    • 5

Pull out the alarm fuse as indicated on the diagram using the fuse puller. Insert the memory reader into the lighter slot to keep all existing data. Disconnect the negative charge of the battery. Leave it disconnected for three minutes. Replace the negative battery charge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some cars may have several fuse boxes. Check the electronic diagram and consult your car manual to locate proper fuses and wires.

  • Never work under the hood of the car with a lighted cigarette. Automobile fumes are combustible.
