Programming for the Kindle

The Amazon Kindle allows users to do more than simply read books. Amazon develops "active content" for users to enjoy. Active content is any program, other than reading material, with which users interact. To provide more active content to its patrons, Amazon allows individuals to create their own active content. Since the Kindle is owned and operated by Amazon, the company sets guidelines for how active content must be developed. The most efficient way to develop active content for the Kindle successfully is to use Amazon's Kindle Development Kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Request to become a beta developer. The application form requires users to input their name, e-mail address, phone number and application intent. Applicants can also enter their business or website information to provide further credentials. Before submitting your application, read through Amazon's terms and conditions and mark the box to indicate that you agree to them. Click "Submit" on the application page to formally submit your application. Amazon must accept your application before you can continue.

    • 2

Download the Kindle Development Kit. Amazon provides this software free for all accepted applicants. Programmers will use this software to create a variety of Kindle active content, including games.

    • 3

Determine the type of active content you wish to create and the appropriate pricing option. Amazon allows users to price their content for free, as a one-time purchase, or as a monthly subscription. The type of active content and the amount of revenue you desire will determine which pricing option you select.

    • 4

Develop your active content. Use the Kindle Development Kit and its features to create unique content that Kindle owners will enjoy. Amazon offers developer support for programmers who have specific technical questions as well as sample code and documentation. There is also a FAQ page for more general support. (See Resources)

    • 5

Test your content. The Kindle Development Kit contains a Kindle Simulator, which allows programmers to test their active content before submitting it for final review. The simulator will act as a Kindle and will display the information a Kindle user would see on his device. Testing your content allows you to see whether the program works properly.

    • 6

Fix any errors you find during testing, which might include rewriting code. You might also have noticed some aesthetic problems during testing. Change these as well to fit your preferences.

    • 7

Submit your active content for review. Amazon will determine whether your active content is appropriate and meets their criteria. Once accepted, your active content will be available for download to Kindle users.

Tips & Warnings

  • Review your application information for accuracy before submitting it.

  • Test your active content thoroughly.

  • Adhere to all of Amazon's terms and conditions for developing active content.

  • Changes to active content cannot be made after it has been approved.
