How to Paint Sidewalks

How to Paint Sidewalks thumbnail
Etch the sidewalk before you paint.

If you are planning to paint a sidewalk, consider some important factors first. Sidewalks are typically concrete, a surface ill-suited for paint adhesion. You must etch the concrete with a special solution, prior to application, or the final finish will ultimately shed. In addition, because sidewalks are exposed to harsh weather and physical duress, you should select a particular coating, formulated with the ability to remain durable under harsh circumstances.

Things You'll Need

  • Pressure washer
  • Protective eyewear
  • Concrete etch
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Wood stir sticks
  • Floor squeegee

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the sidewalk, using a pressure washer. Allow the sidewalk to dry for about 4 to 6 hours.

    • 2

Don goggles to protect your eyes. Mix 2 gallons of water with the epoxy etching crystals in a 5-gallon bucket. Stir the mixture for at least three minutes.

    • 3

Spread the etching solution over the sidewalk, using a squeegee. Wait 15 minutes, then use the pressure washer to rinse the sidewalk. Wait another 4 to 6 hours until the sidewalk is dry.

    • 4

Mix the epoxy catalyst and resin in a 5-gallon bucket, using a wood stir stick.

    • 5

Apply the epoxy paint to the sidewalk, using a roller. Wait 6 full hours before walking onto the sidewalk.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use an acrylic floor paint on a sidewalk.

  • Do not use ordinary oil or latex paint on sidewalks, or the finish will eventually flake.
