How to Install a Car Seat in a 2007 Sonata

The 2007 Hyundai Sonata comes equipped with two sets of lower anchors and three tethers, allowing car seat installation using what Hyundai calls the ISOFIX system, but it is more commonly known as LATCH. The LATCH system in the Sonata allows two car seats, in the outboard positions, to be installed without the use of seat belts. A car seat in the middle seat uses a partial LATCH installation but also incorporates the car's seat belt.

Instructions

  1. Outboard Installation

    • 1

Buckle the seat belt and allow it to retract so that the chest strap is lying flat across the back of the seat. This will keep the seat belt out of the child's reach and prevent the child from becoming tangled in a loose strap or being hit in the head with the buckle during a crash.

    • 2

Place your car seat in the back seat outboard position. Locate the top tether hook, located behind the back seat headrest. In the 2007 Sonata, it has a cover that flips up with a picture of an anchor on it. Flip the cover up to reveal the top tether hook.

    • 3

Snap the top tether strap onto the tether hook, following your car seat owner's manual for instructions on how to use the top tether strap. This will vary by model.

    • 4

Locate the lower anchor clips. In the 2007 Sonata, there are two hooks on each outboard seat. The hooks are labeled with small buttons that have a picture of a baby on them. Again, follow your car seat's specific instructions for using the lower anchor tethers.

    • 5

Check your installation. The car seat should be installed tightly, but with a tiny bit of wiggle room. Shake the seat. It should move no more than one inch to the right or left. If it wiggles more than this, you will need to pull on the LATCH strap to make it tighter.

    Middle Seat Installation

    • 6

Position the car seat in the middle of the back seat. Ensure that the middle console is flipped up and completely locked into position. If it is not pushed all the way in, the car seat will not install properly.

    • 7

Connect the top tether strap on the car seat to the tether hook located behind the back seat headrest. The top tether cover has a picture of an anchor on it. Read your car seat manual to find the specific instructions for clicking the strap into place and tightening it properly.

    • 8

Pull the seat belt all the way out. You will hear a clicking noise. This is the Hyundai seat belt locking mechanism. Weave the seat belt through the belt path marked on your car seat. Check your owner's manual if you are unsure where this is located. Retract the seat belt until the belt is tight. Tug on the belt to ensure that it is locked.

    • 9

Wiggle the car seat to check the tightness of your installation. Your seat should move no more than an inch in either direction. If it moves more than an inch, place your knee inside the car seat and tug on the seat belt to tighten it further.

Tips & Warnings

  • If installing a rear-facing car seat, skip the steps involving the top tether. This feature is for forward-facing car seats only.

  • If you cannot get the seat belt to making a clicking noise or if it comes loose when you tug on it, the lock is not working. Your car seat comes with a belt locking clip. Follow the instructions in your manual for the locking clip and use this instead.

  • All cars manufactured after Sept. 1, 2005, are designed to safely use the LATCH lower anchor tethers up to 80 pounds. However, most car seats do not come with LATCH straps strong enough to be used to 80 pounds. Check your car seat manual for the weight restrictions for your straps and switch to using the seat belt instead of the LATCH when the child reaches the maximum weight. Use the instructions for a middle seat installation.
