How to Glue Fiberglass Parts Together

How to Glue Fiberglass Parts Together thumbnail
You should use sandpaper before gluing together fiberglass parts.

Attaching fiberglass pieces together may be necessary if you are working on a building or craft project. Use an epoxy adhesive glue specifically designed to attach fiberglass pieces to one another. These glues can easily be found at most building-supply stores. You must follow a few steps to clean, smooth and prepare the fiberglass for gluing, and this process is easy even for fiberglass novices. By doing this work yourself, you will save the cost of hiring someone else to professionally complete the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Smooth the surface area of the fiberglass parts using sandpaper before gluing the pieces together. This will help the adhesive stick to the parts better.

    • 2

Wipe an acetone liquid over the fiberglass parts with a rag. This clean and removes dust and dirt, which is an important step to ensure the fiberglass adheres to the glue.

    • 3

Purchase an epoxy glue specifically designed for use on fiberglass from a building-supply store. The label on the glue should say it is used for fiberglass. If you're not sure, ask a store employee.

    • 4

Spread a layer of epoxy glue on the surface area of the fiberglass part where you want it to attach to the other fiberglass piece. Press the surface with the glue on it against the surface of the other fiberglass part.

    • 5

Hold the two pieces together for about 30 seconds, then gently lay the fiberglass on a sheet of newspaper outside until fully dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear gloves and an apron to protect your hands and clothes from the acetone and epoxy glue.

  • If fumes from the acetone or epoxy glue become too intense, open a door or window.
