How to Take Care of a Zebrina Pendula Plant

Now reclassified and renamed Tradescantia zebrina, Zebrina pendula, more commonly known as wandering Jew or wandering traveler, is a rapidly growing plant with leaves that are deep reddish-purple underneath, with silvery green and purple stripes on top. Because the vines can quickly grow to lengths of several feet, Tradescantia zebrina does best in a hanging basket where it can cascade over the sides. The plant is a good choice for beginning growers, as it isn't fussy and will thrive with little attention. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Plant Tradescantia zebrina in a container filled with good-quality commercial potting soil. Add a handful of perlite or peat moss to loosen the soil and improve drainage.

    • 2

Place the plant in bright sunlight, but avoid placing the plant near sunny windows on hot afternoons.

    • 3

Water the plant with warm water when the water feels slightly dry to the touch. Water sparingly so that the soil is slightly damp but not wet.

    • 4

Feed the plant every two weeks during spring and summer. Use a liquid houseplant fertilizer that has been diluted to half-strength.

    • 5

Pinch the stems as often as needed to keep the plant compact and bushy and to prevent the plant from growing out of control.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tradescantia zebrina is easy to propagate. Cut a stem tip about 4 inches long. Pinch the leaves from the bottom half of the stem, then plant the stem in a small container filled with commercial potting soil. Cover the container with a plastic bag to create a mini-greenhouse, then place the container in indirect light. Keep the soil moist. Remove the plastic bag when you can see new growth.
