If you're going on vacation or summer is approaching, you probably don't want to take on the appearance of a ghost. 1
Exfoliate your skin with a loofah and exfoliating lotion. Rub the loofah and exfoliating lotion over your skin when you're in the shower. This rids the skin of dead cells. You won't tan as quickly with dead skin cells covering your skin.

2
Choose a sunscreen with less than 15 SPF protection, but more than 8 SPF. You'll increase your risk of skin damage if you use anything less than 8 SPF. Rub the sunscreen over any area of skin that will be exposed to the sun. Remember spots such as your ears and toes. Rub it evenly over your skin for a better chance of an even tan.

3
Lie flat on a towel or lounge chair if you're tanning outside, and flip over onto your back or stomach every 15 to 30 minutes. Lying flat and continuously flipping promotes a good, overall tan that encompasses your entire body.
-
4
Tan from one to two hours each day. Lying in the sun for one to two hours is plenty of time to quickly develop a tan; any longer and you increase your chances for skin damage.
-
5
Visit a tanning salon on rainy and cloudy days. Most salons also offer spray-on tans, which are less dangerous than tanning beds.

Tips & Warnings
Start out by tanning for 15 minutes or less if you have a fair complexion.
Drink plenty of water during and after your tanning session, and apply moisturizer. The sun dehydrates both you and your skin; water and moisturizer will restore much-needed moisture to your skin.
