Directions to Make an Amice Pattern

An amice is part of the vestments worn by a Catholic priest during Mass. It consists of a rectangular or oblong piece of fabric large enough to cover the shoulders, chest and upper arms with ties in the front to hold it in place.

If you wish to make amices according to Church specifications, it is not that difficult. As with all sewing projects, starting with a simple, clear pattern will help you accomplish the project most effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Adhere to amice size guidelines. German theologian Valentin Thalhofer proclaimed in the 19th century that the amice should measure at minimum 24 inches wide and 32 inches long, and these measurements are still followed today. You can choose to design your amice pattern with straight rectangular ends or curved oblong ends. Add 1/2 or 5/8 inches to your pattern for seam allowance as you draw it on your pattern paper.

    • 2

Sew a cross to the center of the amice. Note that spot on your pattern so you can find it on the stitched amice later and ensure the cross is in the correct position. Mark where the front ties are to be attached.

    • 3

Cut out the amice pattern carefully. Your pattern is now ready to use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Amices may only be made of flax or hemp fibers, so choose linen or hemp fabric when you are ready to sew the amice. The string ties may be made of silk ribbon.
