Upgrade the DVD decoder on your computer.

Windows operating systems use a file called a codec, or decoder, to play back multimedia files. If you want to watch a DVD video on your computer, you must have a DVD decoder installed. However, DVD decoders will become outdated over time, which means that newer DVD videos will not run properly on your computer. You can upgrade the DVD decoder on your computer by running a command via the Run box.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," type "Run" (without quotes) and press the "Enter" key to open the Run box.

    • 2

    • 3

Click the "OK" button to visit the website of your DVD decoder's manufacturer. Follow the on-screen instructions on the website to upgrade the DVD decoder on your computer.
