British Airways uses London's Heathrow Airport as its main base for flights to more than 600 airports. Through the One World alliance and partnerships, British Airways takes passengers to every continent except Antarctica. On its international flights, first class passenger amenities include spacious seating and upscale food. The airline's first class passengers also enjoy a generous free baggage allowance.

Carry-on Luggage

British Airways restricts carry-on luggage for first class passengers and other cabins. The limit is one bag and a computer case or purse. Your carry-on bag cannot weigh more than 51 pounds and it must fit in the plane’s overhead baggage compartment. The maximum carry-on bag size is 22 by 18 by 10 inches. Your handbag or computer case must fit completely under the seat. It cannot exceed 18 by 14 by 8 inches. These dimensions include your bag’s handle and wheels, if applicable.

Free Checked Baggage

Adult passengers in the British Airways first class section can check three bags without paying any baggage fees. Each child between age two and 11 can check three bags, a portable folding stroller and one car seat. Infants under age two get only one free bag along with the stroller and car seat. The airline allows an adult first class passenger or child to pay a fee to check up to 10 additional bags. British Airways does not waive the one checked bag limit for infants. The airline does not charge you to check wheelchairs or health equipment.

Baggage Restrictions

The official weight limit for free first class baggage is 70 pounds; however, British Airways does not charge first class passengers a fee for overweight luggage. Bags checked for children and infants have the same weight limit. Measuring from the handle to the bottom of the wheels, the maximum height is 35.5 inches. The width limit is 29.5 inches, and the depth maximum is 16 inches. British Airways does not allow you to check bulky or oversize items as part of your free baggage allowance. You cannot check any items that exceed 79.5 by 29.5 inches, but the airline will accept them as freight.

Mixed Booking

When you have a ticket with a connection between your British Airways flight and another airline, the lower baggage limits apply. If your outbound and return flights on British Airways combine a first class flight with a different class on the same ticket, the airline gives you the first class baggage allowance for your trip. When you buy separate tickets with mixed inbound and outbound cabin classes, the airline uses the baggage rule that governs each flight.
