How to Locate Hydrogen Fuel Stations

While more people are starting to drive hydrogen-powered cars, they're not nearly as common as gasoline or diesel vehicles, for which fuel stations are generally easy to find. You might find it challenging to find a hydrogen fuel station, so if you own, lease or test-drive a hydrogen car, it's a good idea to find fueling locations ahead of time, so you don't get stuck at the side of the road.

Instructions

  1. U.S. Department of Energy

    • 1

Go to the U.S. Department of Energy's Hydrogen Fueling Station Locations website (see Resources).

    • 2

Click on a state in the U.S. map to find locations of sites currently offering hydrogen. The map is color-coded to show states with zero, 10 or less, or 21 to 50 stations.

    • 3

Click on the "Details" link for a hydrogen fueling station in the state you selected. The list is sorted by city, and you will see information about whether a location is open to the public or for private access only, and its address. You can also click on each station's "Map" link to view a map of the location.

    National Hydrogen Association

    • 4

Go to the National Hydrogen Association's Hydrogen Fueling Station Database website (see Resources).

    • 5

Click on "United States" or "Canada," and then select a state or province from the pull-down menu.

    • 6

Click either "Operational" or "Planned" in the status box, and if you want more options, click on the "More Search Options" link to select public or private access, dispensing type and dispensing pressure options, and then click "Search." A list of hydrogen fueling stations and their locations will appear, with links to click for maps for some of them.

    Fuel Cells

    • 7

Download the "Worldwide Hydrogen Fueling Stations" PDF document from the Fuel Cells site (see Resources). It provides information about what kinds of hydrogen car projects a location supports, such as government, university or business research.

    • 8

Browse the "Location" column, which is sorted by cities and states, to find a hydrogen station near you.

    • 9

Look in the "Specifics" column to see whether it is a public fueling station or if it will otherwise be able to supply hydrogen for your vehicle. There is no contact information in this document beyond city and state, so you'll have to get the address from another source, such as the websites mentioned in the previous two sections.
