How to Force an Application to Use a Proxy

Software applications use the computer's proxy settings, which are set using the Windows Control Panel Internet configurations. Proxy servers let your application such as a Web browser use another server to access the Internet. The proxy server settings are stored in the computer's registry, so other applications can find your computer's proxy settings. This forces Internet traffic to filter through the proxy server on the network.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Control Panel." Click the "Network and Internet" link, then click "Internet Options."

    • 2

Click the "Connections" tab. Click the "LAN Settings" button to open a configuration window. Check the box labeled "Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections)."

    • 3

Type the proxy server's address in the text box labeled "Address." Click "OK" to save your settings. Click "OK" again in the main properties window to complete the changes and close the window.
