How to Change the Operating Side Jamb Weatherstrip on an Andersen Patio Door
Andersen patio doors come in a range of style options and are built to provide maintenance-free dependability for many years. Over time, the standard weatherstripping material can wear out or detach, preventing a proper fit and seal. Replacing this weatherstrip is an easy procedure and will restore the door's weathertight integrity. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
-
Hinged Patio Doors
-
1
Open the patio door to expose the lock side vertical jamb.
-
2
Remove the old vinyl weatherstrip from the jamb by pulling it from the routed channel in the jamb stop. Pry the top or bottom of the weatherstrip out of the channel, then pull evenly outward to remove the weatherstrip completely. Clear any of the vinyl material from the channel that might separate from the weatherstrip during removal.
-
-
3
Measure the height of the jamb with a tape measure, then trim the new weatherstrip to that dimension plus 1 inch, using a utility knife. The extra length allows for slight stretching during installation and will be cut to length once installed.
-
4
Install the new weatherstrip piece by beginning at the top and feeding the ribbed side of the gasket into the jamb channel with the tip of a screwdriver. The gasket will snap smoothly into the channel by pressing inward on the weatherstrip.
-
5
Trim the excess weatherstrip length at the bottom to flush with the threshold surface.
Sliding Patio Doors
-
6
Open the patio door to the approximate halfway point in the overall door frame.
-
7
Lower the door by adjusting the bottom roller mechanisms accessed from each door edge through the hole just above the base of the door frame. Use a screwdriver to turn the roller adjustment screws counterclockwise until the door bottom is approximately 1/4 inch above the track.
-
8
Remove the door from the frame. Grip the door from both sides and lift the frame upward slightly to allow the bottom to swing outward, then lower the door frame to extract it from the top track.
-
9
Rest the door on its side, with the lockset downward.
-
10
Slide the door's old vinyl weatherstrip from the channel in the door frame by pulling evenly from either end. Clear any of the vinyl material from the channel that might separate from the weatherstrip during removal.
-
11
Measure the length of the weatherstrip channel, then cut the new weatherstrip to that dimension plus 1 inch, using a utility knife. The extra length allows for slight stretching during installation and will be cut to length once installed.
-
12
Insert the end of the new weatherstrip into the bottom end of the door channel and slide it to flush with the top of the door.
-
13
Trim the excess weatherstrip flush with the door frame.
-
14
Reinstall the door by lifting the top of the door into the top frame channel, then swinging the bottom inward over the bottom track and lowering down. The rollers must align with the track rail.
-
15
Adjust the door's roller mechanisms by turning the adjustment screws clockwise until the door is level and the door latch aligns properly with the strike.
