How to Make a Lavender Sachet Gift

Dried lavender flowers have a relaxing scent that's ideal for use in dresser drawers, purses, gym bags, cars, kitchens and many other locations. Lavender sachets are simple and inexpensive, making them ideal party favor gifts, hostess gifts, stocking stuffers or holiday gifts for acquaintances. Best of all, you can personalize the gift by making lavender sachets in fabric patterns and shapes of your choice. Make a whole set of these sachets so you always have one on hand when you need a small gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a scrap of fabric in half and cut both layers into a shape of your choice that measures at least 3 inches in each direction. You will now have two matching pieces of fabric.

    • 2

Place the fabric pieces so their right sides are both facing inward and pin around the edges to hold them in place.

    • 3

Sew along the edges of the fabric pieces with a straight stitch on your sewing machine. Leave one side, or about 3 inches, open so you can fill the sachet.

    • 4

Turn the sachet inside-out so the stitching is hidden inside and you now see the correct side of the fabric.

    • 5

Pour dried lavender leaves into the sachet. Make sure you can still pull the remaining edge of the fabric pieces together.

    • 6

Cut a piece of ribbon to about 4 to 6 inches long and fold it in half.

    • 7

Place the ends of the folded ribbon in between the pieces of fabric on the open edge. Place pins along this edge to hold the ribbon loop in place and make sure the edges of the fabric pieces stay matched up.

    • 8

Sew along the last edge of the sachet with a sewing machine or by hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your sachets are large, mix dry rice in with the lavender to fill up the sachets.

  • Use fabric glue instead of sewing to make this a craft project for kids.

  • For a simpler version of the project, fill drawstring muslin or organza bags with lavender instead of sewing your own sachets. All you have to do is spoon the lavender into the bag and pull the drawstring tight.
