How to Improve a Chess Elo Rating

Chess is a game of strategy between two players. Players move pieces across a checkered board in an effort to capture the opponent's king piece. Pieces have different roles and can only be moved across the board in specific patterns. The Elo rating system was developed by Dr. Arpad Elo and was adopted by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1970. Ratings are determined by wins and losses against other players.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice chess frequently. Elo ratings are based on wins, and wins can be gained through practice and familiarity with the game.

    • 2

Examine famous matches. Studying strategies of famous players can help increase win percentages and consequently increase your Elo rating.

    • 3

Play against opponents with higher Elo ratings. Higher differences in Elo ratings will result in a larger increases in ratings. Practicing against stronger opponents will also provide valuable insight to the game. Losing against stronger opponents will also decrease your score less than losing to opponents with similar or lower ratings.

Tips & Warnings

  • When choosing opponents, the FIDE holds a 400-point difference policy. The increase/decrease ratios cap when two opponents have a rating difference of 400 points or more. For example, a match between players with ratings of 1400 and 1800 will have the same ratios as a match between those with 1400 and 2200.
