How to Get a Kentucky Electrical License

How to Get a Kentucky Electrical License thumbnail
The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction regulates the issuance of electrical licenses.

An electrical license is required when performing electrical work for the public in the state of Kentucky. Kentucky Revised Statute (KRS) 339.230 requires a person to be at least 16 years old before he can begin to fulfill the work and educational requirements needed to obtain an electrical license. The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction administers all electrical license requests. Working unsupervised without a license can result in a maximum fine of $5,000 and up to 180 days of incarceration.

Complete the required education and work training as stated in KRS 227A.060(3). Working for four years under the supervision of a licensed electrician and completing an electrical training course are sufficient to meet the requirements. Taking a training course is not necessary if you have worked for at least six years in the electrical field. Alternatively, three years of work experience and an associate degree from a college affiliated with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System also fulfills the work and education requirements.
